The Junior Youth Spiritual Empowerment Program views young people aged 12–15 not as passive or difficult, but as motivated, aware, and full of potential. It creates a space for them to explore identity, build character, develop purpose, and engage meaningfully with the world around them.

This is not a religious class or academic tutoring program. While inspired by the Bahá’í community, it is open to all and does not teach religion. Instead, it offers a welcoming, inclusive space for youth to reflect, express themselves, and form genuine, uplifting friendships.

The program is offered by Bahá’í communities around the world with a perspective that sees youth at this age as, “…moving decidedly in the opposite direction [to global trends], seeing in junior youth instead altruism, an acute sense of justice, eagerness to learn... and a desire to contribute to the construction of a better world.”

What Do We Actually Do?

Junior youth meet fortnightly in small, supportive groups, guided by Animators — slightly older youth or young adults who serve as mentors, role models, and friends. Each session blends meaningful discussion with creative expression and joyful activity, including:

  • Reading and discussing stories that explore moral and social themes like joy, hope, excellence, service, and the power of words

  • Arts & crafts

  • Drama and music

  • Sports and games

  • Planning and completing community service projects

  • Occasional camp-style events, bringing groups together for deeper learning and connection

Family Involvement:

Families are an important part of the journey. Parents and caregivers are kept in the loop through WhatsApp updates, regular family nights, and a youth blog where the junior youth themselves share highlights from their experiences. Animators are always available for a chat and happy to support families at every step.

Why It Matters:

The early adolescent years are a time of enormous growth—intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. This program helps young people build a strong foundation for the future, grounded in purpose, reflection, and service to others.

Amira

Hi! I’m Amira, I’m a first year uni student studying psychology at Monash and have been part of community spaces for a while now, including teaching children’s classes. I’ve always liked working with young people and finding creative ways to make things engaging and meaningful (I usually find a way to sneak in some art too).

Daniel and I actually went through the Junior Youth Program together when we were younger, and it left a lasting impact on both of us. Now, we’re really looking forward to creating a group that’s welcoming, thoughtful, and fun. Somewhere they can learn new ideas, grow intellectually, spiritually and socially, and build real friendships.

Daniel

Hi! I’m someone who’s super passionate about sports — whether it’s playing basketball or golf, or just watching a good game, I’m all in. I’m also a big food lover, always up for trying something new or enjoying a good meal with friends.

I started this program with the hope of creating a fun and welcoming space for young people to come together — a place where they can laugh, learn, and grow. My goal is to support each of you as you develop spiritually, mentally, physically, and academically. I’m really excited for the journey ahead and can’t wait to grow alongside you!

Most important of all, it is during this period that the mind is most questioning and the the spiritual values that will guide the person’s future behaviour are adopted.
